All Mitchell, all the time

Want to have the Mitchell report read to you today? If you're an XM Satellite Radio subscriber, you're in the luck. On Channel 176, XM will broadcast a continuous reading of the report after its release today. Does that make up for being the satellite service without Howard Stern?

UM, not MU

It's a local telecast, so you would expect the analyst on today's Maryland-American basketball game to know the name of the university in College Park. But during the Comcast SportsNet telecast, Ron Thompson at least twice referred to "Maryland University."

Toasted at the roast

Check out this report from last week's Mike and Mike roast in Atlantic City. Note item on the Ravens' Ed Reed apparently enjoying the festivities so much he got a new nickname.

Billy and the Terps ...

... oh, but they're weird and they're wonderful.Having dispensed with a random Elton John reference, let's get to a few snippets of what Billy Packer had to say during the Maryland-Wake Forest telecast.Assessing how much the Terps need Eric Hayes to return to play point guard, Packer said how Greivis Vasquez is miscast in that role: "The more he has the ball in his hands, the more he feels the pressure to make plays."After watching Maryland respond to holding a lead late in the game by rushing to take ill-advised shots or turning the ball over, Packer said of Gary Williams: "This has got to be one of the most frustrating teams he's coached."And finally, summing up the play of both teams, Packer offered: "I've seen a lot of guys playing unintelligent basketball."

Not funny

Whoever was working in production today at ESPN 1300 with Mark Viviano did him no favor when he mentioned the breaking news about accusations that Randy Moss committed some kind of violent act against a woman. While Viviano and co-host Damon "Bulldog" Yaffe wisely made no comment on the report, someone thought it would be funny to play a sound bite of comic sounds of yelling and screaming (from South Park?).Whatever the particulars of the report, regardless of the truth of the allegations, the immediate implication was that violence against women is a laughing matter. I certainly don't think Viviano or Yaffe believe that -- and they might need to have a little talk with the person punching the buttons.

Headgear

Because I was working in the office, I ended up watching most of Sunday's NFL games with the sound off, so I couldn't really tell you what Jimmy Johnson had to say during Fox's telecast. However, Johnson's famously helmet-haired coif, encircled at ear level by Belicheckian ear warmers, made the top of his head look like something you might see on Ace of Cakes.

Can you hear me now?

Did you catch this? (Warning: Site has some rough language.) Dan Marino's cell phone went off a few times during CBS' AFC championship game halftime show. Too bad he didn't have some catchy song for a ringtone. (At least one site contained a suggestion of Hootie and the Blowfish's "Only Wanna Be with You," being that Marino appeared in the band's video for the song.)# # #Speaking of Dans, former ESPNer Dan Patrick appeared on David Letterman's show Monday night, promoting his syndicated radio show and his Sports Illustrated column. The highlight of an awkward appearance: Patrick revealing he had put on what he thought were dress shoes but actually turned out to be golf shoes.

Len Bias documentary

The film is scheduled for release on April 11, according to USA Today. We'll have to see if there really is anything new, but just the trailer is certain to bring back a rush of memories for anyone who saw Bias play and was touched by his shocking death.
